How to think about open space
As the HRA considers revisions to its draft urban renewal plan, open space has been a major focus of discussion in the public forums. The HRA is considering all the ideas that have been expressed so far about open space and other uses for the land.
There are many questions yet to be answered. How much of the HRA land should be dedicated as open space? What different types of open space uses should be created?
But in addition to ideas for open space components, approved plans are needed to establish the funding for each improvement, its operation, and its future maintenance. These funding plans must be included in a specific, achievable urban renewal plan.
Over the summer, the HRA is actively expanding its research on choices for the use of the land and how to fund them, including grants, parking fees, income from development, or other sources. The goal is to assemble more options and information for community consideration this fall.
